Description
Heptadecanoic acid (also known as margaric acid) is a 17-carbon odd-chain saturated fatty acid (C17:0) found in trace concentrations in dairy fat, ruminant adipose tissue, Escherichia coli, and select plant species. It has gained prominence as a biomarker for dairy intake and is increasingly studied in the context of metabolic health, cardiometabolic risk, and gut microbiome composition. While traditionally associated with animal-derived sources, its occurrence in certain plants positions it among structurally unique plant-derived bioactives of interest in nutritional biochemistry and lipidomics. Current research explores its physiological relevance and potential protective roles in chronic disease modulation.
