Description

Stigmasterol is a naturally occurring phytosterol belonging to the class of plant-derived bioactives, structurally defined by a hydroxyl group at the C-3 position and characteristic double bonds at Δ⁵ and Δ²². It is abundant in plant oils such as soybean, rapeseed, and legume seeds, and is also detected in unpasteurized milk. Stigmasterol serves critical functions as a plant secondary metabolite and as a biochemical precursor in the semi-synthesis of steroid hormones, including progesterone. Its biofunctional properties – notably antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cholesterol-lowering activities – have led to its extensive application in nutraceuticals, cosmeceuticals, and functional foods. Current pharmacognosy and lipid research continue to explore its role in modulating lipid metabolism, cell membrane integrity, and chronic disease pathways.
